Markings:
signed E. L. Kirchner (lower right)
Condition:
The canvas is unlined. The surface is slightly dirty. There is some frame abrasion along all four edges, with associated losses, most notably in the lower right corner which is not visible when framed. The canvas is slightly loose on its stretcher. There is a nailhead sized loss to lower right corner and two pindot sized losses, one at the upper right corner in the blue background and the other at upper left corner in the blue background, only visible under close inspection. The artist applies heavy impasto throughout, which has caused horizontal craquelure in the thickly painted areas, most notably in the lower register in the upside down pigeon's wingspan with a one inch area of pindot losses with minor flaking in the right wing and a pinhead sized loss in the left wing. Under UV light: one nailhead sized area of inpainting to lower right corner and another dot of inpainting to the right of the bouquet flowers in the blue pigment, to address a prior loss. This work is in overall good condition.
